Great video John. I’m perplexed about this one too and not sure how I’m going to vote. The problem I have is that most people who are advocating for this are coming from a very idealistic place and there is very little discussion about the practicalities or whether it’s likely to achieve it’s stated goals. That’s always a red flag for me. And it’s very hard to undo constitutional changes, so it’s definitely something we want to get right.

The way I would prefer to see this approached is that we legislate a Voice for a period of 5 years and then, if it’s working well, we have a referendum on whether to enshrine it in the constitution. By then we’ll see whether it working and whether we want to make it permanent. We’ll have an idea of things like whether it helps improve the live of First Nations People, whether it is run well, whether it impedes the workings of government, whether it generates a lot of litigation, etc.

Then we won’t be asking people to vote on a constitutional change with no data about whether it’s likely to achieve its goals.

I think asking people to vote on something so significant with so many in unknowns is not a great way to go about it and we’d be making a much more informed decision if we have a few years of experience under our belts first.
