Great tips John! My husband always starts too hard and gets hurt; a pulled calf muscle this time! I stick to walking 4-5 miles a few times/week to supplement everything else I do.

I used to have a lot of calf problems. It drove me mad. But two things fixed it. First, I do most of my running on grass. And second, I focus on spreading my toes whilst I run. This spreads the load evenly across the Plantar Fascia, which leads to a very even load on the Soleus muscle. When the big toe is doing all the pushing off, the load is concentrated in one sector of the Soleus.
